Dr. Usmani is a radiation oncologist at the University of Alberta and came to discuss with us the realities behind hormone treatments for prostate cancer. Using studies and his own observations as an oncologist, Dr. Usmani discusses the positive and negative outcomes from traditional hormone deprivation therapy as well as hypothesizing about new studies aim to use diabetes drug Metformin as a possible treatment for prostate cancer. So far the results have been promising, but formal studies called PREMIUM (PREvention of Metabolic syndrome and Increased weight Using Metformin) and PRIME (PRevention and Intervention for MEtabolic syndrome) and now being piloted in major city centers across Canada in the hope of finding new advances in prostate cancer treatment. An honest and enlightening Q&A follows, discussing the different kind of hormonal treatments and why one must be patient when testing promising new treatments.
